I just wanted to note two things.

1. I've been advocating for a Creative Commons license for the ALA website, but it has to go through the lawyers first because they've had problems in the past where someone literally stole their content and then sold it. I know a CC license could include language to prevent that, but unfortunately it isn't as simple as just slapping the license on the site (believe me, I've tried). I am hoping to start incorporating a CC license on the blogs soon, though.

2. From what I understand, Drupal or Plone (I forget which one) actually came in second when they evaluated the software, but was found to be lacking in some of the required features. I think the problem is actually more with the information architecture of the site than the software, but then we're still rolling out the new CMS. We'll be posting updates for how it's going at http://blogs.ala.org/ittsupdate.php .

3. Anyone affiliated with ALA (for work or professional purposes, not personal ones) can already request a blog or wiki! :-)

I've always liked the NPR site. Nice (and interesting!) to look at, easy to use, and their search engine works (at least in my experience) extremely well.

No sites to suggest right off hand, but please for the love of all that is good and/or holy (see above) get them to make the freakin' URLs shorter!

Have fun in Chi! I was there this week talking to ACRL and it was very fun and informative. But not very wintry.

EDUCAUSE CONNECT (http://connect.educause.edu/) might provide some inspiration. Anyone who works at an EDUCAUSE institution can start a blog or contribute to a set of Wikis. The blogs can be accessed individually or in aggregate. The blogs have taken off; the wikis have yet to catch fire.

Two thoughts: one...consider trying to convince them to offer the content via a Creative Commons license. The ALA needs to step up and begin to model the behavior we want to see in others.

Two: For the love of all that is holy, get them using OSS to build the site. There's a TON of stuff out there that would be better than the stuff they're using now.

Have fun!
