Being a hysterical librarian, I do not believe in taking books off the shelves of libraries nor do I think that moving “inappropriate” children’s books to an adult section is a good fix for the “problem”. Parents should be monitoring what their children are doing in the library if they are that concerned about where and which books are on the shelves. Call me crazy, but if you want your children to learn your values and not society’s, maybe you should try teaching them yourself and not relying on others.
All of the above was a preface to this post on Bookslut today. Unfortunately, Louisiana is not the first place, nor will it be the last, where this sort of tripe occurs. NPR had an interesting story on this issue as well.
