I am a notoriously bad speller (my typing leaves something to be desired as well). My grammar and punctuation are much better. I am an English major whose favorite tool is the OED, but I constantly use Google Toolbar to check my spelling. Guardian Unlimited has a nice little spelling quiz, which I took, and got a 16/23. I am not really surprised. (link from Rochelle)

I’m surprised. I am a good speller (not excellent, mind you) and I also got 16/23.
It’s double letter hell. I might’ve done better if I’d been asked to type or write the word…
Eep. I got a 15, and I’m not a bad speller! They managed to peg all the ones I have trouble with. Meanies.
I got 17 out of the 23. Tht thing about it is some of them look so easy, like you say, “oh yea, it has to be spelled that way” only to get it wrong. Anyhow, it was a nice learning exercise.
Not a good test. They pretty much focused on words that just had the double letter questions. And the english language is not very consistent in those cases. The double letters also happen to be my spelling kryptonite and it got me. I got an 11 out of 23 and I know I am a better speller than Jane. Although, I actually suspect that Jane just does not pay attention to her spelling. But she does not need to know I believe that.
