Raising a Geek

Here is Wee Bairn Rochester sitting in the captain’s chair of one of our computer set-ups. He loves to click the mouse and pound the keyboard. Unfortunately for Mr. R, Wee Bairn has already figured out how to open the case up of the CPU, push all the drive buttons, and turn on the printer.

My laptop is basically safe from bairn hacking as he has not figured out how to open it… yet.

–Jane, next step, watching all the good geek movies

Thirty… something

Mr. Rochester was kind enough to point out to me that today I officially move from being just 30 to thirtysomething. Thanks for noticing, love.

I was surprised when Mr. R and the Bairn presented me with an Amazon Kindle. I never expected to own a Kindle, mostly because it was hard for me to justify a purchase of that size when there are so many other things on which to spend our money. My boys though knew how I have been lusting after that particular reading device.

My Kindle pretty much does everything but clean my house for me (now that would be The Awesome). I am in love with my new toy. I have not had a ton of time to explore it, but I did do something I absolutely never do when I got it. I read the owner’s manual in its entirety.

–Jane, looking forward to the blessing of another year

Penultimate Fridays

Mr. Rochester has been working a 9/80 work schedule for a few months now and I am amazed at how much I have loved having three day weekends every other week. We have taken calling the Thursday before the off Friday Penultimate Friday.

Thus, in celebration of Penultimate Friday, I give you the best, and quite possibly the only, penultimate sketch ever, courtesy of Monty Python.

The Rochester house is going to pop open our new home brew and enjoy the sunset.

–Jane, is “not like a last meal or a final snack”

Mmmm… Jensen Ackles

In which I talk about some CW shows

Supernatural has been on the Rochester household list of watched shows for all of its four seasons. It is a very diverting show which has never disappointed me. Mmmmm… Jensen Ackles. And the plots and stuff, obviously.

One of their recent episodes, about some mysterious circumstances at a magician’s conference, was named “Criss Angel is a Douche Bag.” It made me laugh and laugh. The comic styling in Season three of “Ghostfacers” was also hilarious. This clip of Eye of the Tiger was added onto the end of an episode. You Tube is actually a great place to see some funny clips of the Winchester boys. Aaaaand, I am officially sucked in.

About 30 minutes of clips later.

This show uses a lot of classic rock as theme music, which Mr. Rochester and I like. There really is very little I do not like about the show. Mr. R is tired of the self loathing exhibited by Jensen Ackles’ character. Mmmm… Jensen Ackles. But it does not bother me. Not in the way that the angst between Clark and Lana on Smallville makes me want to run from the room screaming and tearing my own eyes out. At least the writers on that show seem to have spared the viewers much of that business this season. The summary of this week’s episode says that Lana will go missing, so I am already getting ready for an episode full of stupidity on the part of Clark. “But I luuuurve her. Why can’t I have her for myself?” *gag*

While I am talking about CW shows, I may as well admit that my guilty pleasure show this year is 90210. I can not stop watching it, even though it is not that great. Is this how people who watch reality television feel? You really want to stop and you feel your brain dripping out your ears at the silliness but you simply can not look away?

–Jane, still does not get “reality” TV

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas…

After a three family, three day Christmas extravaganza, the Rochester household had to recover. There is only so much presents, food, drinks, and family that any sane person can handle.

Of course, the drinks help.

–Jane, had a great Christmas and hopes you did too

Snow!

Snow!

This is usually the time of year when I start complaining about the lack of seasons in Houston. How it is never cold at Thanksgiving and Christmas. How I have to pretend it is cold enough for my favorite scarf. I cry about the 70 degree humid days in December. If you have been around long enough, you have heard me whining about this.

Mr. Rochester thinks it is hilarious that a native Houstonian hates the weather here with such passion.

Last night, I had nothing to complain about. We had actual. real. snow. in. Houston. Even at our house, so close to the coast, we had huge fluffy flakes that fell for a handful of hours. It even stuck around long enough to coat the bushes and the ground. The flakes were the perfect stickiness for snowballs and snowmen; it was a pity there was not more of it.

Children ran screeching down the road and in their yards until well after 10pm. Just the sight of it made me want to cry with joy. I dragged Mr. R, aka Mr. Bah Humbug, outside to enjoy the sight of the gentle flakes. I kissed him in the snow and laughed.

I do not think I need anything else for Christmas this year.

–Jane, Mr. R must still present her with presents, mind you. Jane has been good this year.
